72ga Upgrade

I have a couple more questions 1) How many gallons will the tank really hold since it seems that the overflow wall is about an inch below the top of the trim? 2)I plan to transfer all the sand, LR, and water from the 46ga to the new tank and add an additional bag of sand 25lbs and obiously have the necesary 25ga of new/premixed and airated water to top of the tank as needed. Will this work? Will this cause a new cycle? Im trying to minimize death to the coral/fishes. Please advise me in what is the correct aproach. Thanks.

I'm not sure how much 25# of sand will displace in terms of volume of salt water. So I would just make the 25 gallons. if you make too much, just siphon out some of the old water and use this opportunity as a big water change.

There should be no cycle. But are you using the old sand? I'd be careful as sometimes old sand can grow "stale" and clogged with nutrients. One idea would be to use the new 25# and just scoop some of the old top sand and put it on top.

Be careful when moving the sand .... you may want to rinse it before adding it to your new tank. Try to look up some of the possible problems. Better to have some extra water on hand for that kind of stuff IMHO.
