Re: I'm back!!!

Congrats on the new tank and welcome back. I think Jason (TheTiler) just got the same/similar setup! Good luck with it!

Re: I'm back!!!

yep I ordered the same setup
The stand showed up and I put it together last night
The Tank is showing on the Fed Ex truck out for delivery today
when you get your stand I glued the dowels in place and then put more glue in the other holes when I put it together. You will see what I mean when you get yours

Re: I'm back!!!

Nice, I'm glad we both have the same setup it will be interesting seeing our results.

I hope the ballast is not noisy.... Why wouldnt they have an electronic ballast fot the HQi...

Re: I'm back!!!

Tank showed up ;D
Frigin heavy for a 28
I guess I will try and get water in it tomorrow
I am making water as I type
What are you going to do about the heat issue with the lighting?
Ar you going to get a chiller?

Jason

Re: I'm back!!!

I'm going to be running it with water for a few weeks and I'll check the Temp. Hopefully it can be modded to be a bit cooler without a chiller.

What are you going to be stocking in it? I think I'm going coral/live rock only.

Re: I'm back!!!

I finally chose a place for the tank. I also got a cutting board and cut it to size since I'm not going to use any substrate
Sorry about the quality...cellphone camera

Its on a corner

Here's the cutting board before resizing

Re: I'm back!!!

No sand! thats why I have the cutting board bottom. ;D

I'm waiting for nanotuners to respond to a message about the tank not sitting evenly on the stand. The base of the tank does not touch the stand all the way around. Its lifted on the left front corner.

Hopefully today

Re: I'm back!!!

Is the stand otherwise level/plumb, etc? Strange that the tank wouldn't sit properly on it if it was level. Makes ya wonder if there isn't something out of kilter with the tank. Looking forward to hearing their reply!

Re: I'm back!!!

OK so I found the problem... one of the supports was bigger than the others. I didn't realize that while assembling the stand. I was able to hacksaw the thing to size.

The tank is full of water and rock is in.

The guys from nanotuners did offer to send a new support but I no longer need it.

Will check in later with proper photos

Re: I'm back!!!

Here's the back of the tank after the Auto-Top-Off float was installed. I'm waiting for the chiller to come in before I install I setup the fresh water reservoir.

You can see the Auto-Top-Off device on the shelf. It will be on a timer so it can run for 3mins a day in case the float gets stuck it shouldn't over fill the Aquarium

Filtration

I've made some changes to my JBJ 28g you can see it here:

http://www.celticland.com/about/28.htm

Or here.. but the foramting might be off

One thing I hate about this tank is the "Three Stage" filter. As you can see its a sort of drop-in tray that holds a sponge, carbon, and there's a spot for other media.
The box is half the depth of its enclosure so water can by-pass it completely and go around it. If this box was twice as wide it would have been perfect.
One problem from this design "feature" is that if you stir anything in the tank it will end up back into the tank since it can just go around this filter box.
<img src="http://www.celticland.com/about/28g/0023.JPG" alt="none" width="333" height="398" border="0">

Here is the inside on the box
<img src="http://www.celticland.com/about/28g/0022.JPG" alt="none" border="0">

and here's the bottom on the box
<img src="http://www.celticland.com/about/28g/0024.JPG" alt="none" border="0">
I decided to remove the filtration "box" and replace it with something that can actually filter...
I used this blue filter foam
<img src="http://www.celticland.com/about/28g/0026.JPG" alt="none" border="0" width="350" height="350">

This is how the back of the tank looks. you can see the media basket hanging in the middle it doesn't quite touch the bottom of the compartment. All kinds of junk goes around that filter box and makes its way back into the tank.
<img src="http://www.celticland.com/about/28g/0033.JPG" alt="none" border="0">

I used about 3" of the foam block and stuff it to the bottom until it touched the base.
I then placed bags of carbon, Phosban and Zeolite.

Finally I added a ~2" section foam.
<img src="http://www.celticland.com/about/28g/0032.gif" alt="none" border="0" width="350" height="515">

I then used really fine filter mesh and placed it under the lip of the return and on top of the ~2" section of foam.
<img src="http://www.celticland.com/about/28g/0031.JPG" alt="none" border="0" width="350" height="350">

Sorry about the crappy quality on the pics... Here's how it looks from the top.
I looked at it today and its full of crap I will have to rinse weekly

I've been hit with an algae bloom it on the higher rocks. I hope this new filter will take care of the excess food. I also have to purchase a real filter.
