Algae/ Green Water Problem

I completed my changeover a month ago from my 46ga to the 72ga bow. I kept approximately 50% of my original water. My problem is I have green water and algae builds up on the glass (thick green crust) everyday when my lights come on. I recently started my phosban reactor, made a 20ga water change. I think the bulbs may be too old, purchased a used 8 bulb Current Pro fixture T5- HO. Any clue? ??? I kept my sump filter w/ fugi, chaeto, LR rubble, protein skimmer, Vortech MP 20, 600gph return pump, 80 lbs LR in DT, 60lbs LS.

Green water can be a real pain in the ass to get rid of. The best solution is to buy or borrow a good UV unit which is by far the most effective. Then do 50 % WC ever other day for 6 days with the lights out. By any chance are you getting any sunlight in this tank. That is often a no-no in some cases.

i agree...use a uv sterilizer for about a week, then you can shut it off.

I used a product called clarity http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Clarity.html it clots the stuff and your filter sock or whatever filter media you have then can filter it out. The clarity is safe I used it on tanks with many corals inverts and everything else in it. The green water came back a few times until whatever is feeding it gets reduced. I dont think UV is the way to go since the green water is actually helping your system by removing the unwanted nutrients.
