Attempting to take some pictures

Hi everyone,

I've been playing with my camera, trying to learn how to take decent pictures of my little underwater world.

Here's what I've come up with so far:

Frogspawns & Hammer

Here fishy fishy fishy:

My spotted Cole Tang - trying to hide, of course. :)

Thanks for looking. :)

They look great!

Here's a tip, if you want to focus on a particular subject to make it more interesting, crop it! Like the Kole tang pic, if you wanted to make it more centralized, crop the pic with only him! Nice pics nonetheless, very crisp!

Awesome tip. Thanks a million, Merv. ;D I'll try that - once I find more batteries to take more pictures. :)
I can't believe "cropping" didn't dawn on me when I was fiddling with the software. Another "a duh" moment for me, I guess. :-[

Also I always crop before I resize also so that I can resize to "internet size" after the cropping. With the MP of today's camera, there's plenty of room for cropping and then still resizing to 600px wide after the crop.

Nice photos. It is fun watching your tank fill out. Some day I'll be able to say I saw that tank when it was just starting out! :)

Thanks, Phyl. :) I'll try that with the cropping. It's much easier taking pictures of my flowers because they hold still LOL.

C'mon girl, my tank wasn't empty when you saw it, it was actually full. Full of algae. ;D I remember you telling me I needed "a couple more snails". Yep - only a couple. (<--joke)

Nice pic's Wendy, nice and clear not like the ones I've been taking lately :)

Thanks, Tom. So, do you want to trade cameras then? ;D Just kidding. I wish I had your camera! Just gotta play around with it, you have the far better equipment, you know. ;)

Very nics pics Wendy :)

Thank you, pnoyreefer. :)

Been playing with the camera again this morning, here are the results. I think I got the hang of the cropping and resizing, but I still wish I had better equipment. :-[

Hi Ralph :)

And thank you very much. The last one is an "Acanthastrea" frag. It hasn't grown a lick since I got it, but it's looking good.

Those pics are huge and nice, LOL

Wendy, try taking pics perpendicular to the glass. This will prevent refraction since I notice that your pics are taken at a slight angle. Taking the shots straight perpendicular to the glass will make them come out cleaner with less "haze" because of the refracting properties of glass... OR you can take angled pics, but try to stay as far as possible from the glass when doing it.

Take more, take more! Practice makes, well you know the rest!

Thank you for the tips, Merv and Pnoyreefer. I do need a tripod BADLY because I'm trying so hard not to shake, that I always end up shaking. ::) Ok, hold on, I need to look up what "perpendicular" means.

per·pen·dic·u·lar /ˌpɜrpənˈdɪkyələr/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[pur-puhn-dik-yuh-ler] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective 1. vertical; straight up and down; upright.
2. Geometry. meeting a given line or surface at right angles.
3. maintaining a standing or upright position; standing up.
4. having a sharp pitch or slope; steep.

I think I understand. I'll try that next time, and I think I need to stay a bit further away, too because the pics get blurrier as I try to take extreme closeups. I have 2 Macro settings on my camera, but when I use super macro I can't use the flash nor can I zoom, so I usually use the not so super macro feature. (Did that make any sense? ???)

Of course I had to fiddle with the camera some more just now. Out of God-only-knows-how-many-pictures I took, these are the only ones that turned out somewhat.

Is there any improvement? :-[

yes, a definite yes. The second pic is sharp! now that's perpendicular!

Yup looks great Wendy as always! I gave up with the new camera, I posted a bunch of new pic's awhile ago and no one commented :( I guess the saying is true "if you have nothing good to say" :D so I basically got the hint I'm no photographer... Hey maybe I can trade the camera for the PL in that frag pack ;)

Thank you kindly, Merv. You're right. Practice practice practice. AND steady hands until I get a tripod. :)

Tom, don't go trading that awesome camera of yours now. I'd give anything to have one like it - seriously. It took me ages to figure this one out, and it's a super simple one. I know yours has tons of control buttons and stuff, and the owner's manual is probably as thick as the new Websters. :)

Nice pics Wendy. Mine never come out right with my digital camera. I think its because there is a delay after I press the shutter. I have taken many beautiful pics with a 35mm in years past. Just can't figure this one out.
