Breeding Banggai

I've finally got my wild caught banggai breeding (they probably have done it before and I never noticed till now). Unfortunately, the male keeps aborting the clutch. I keep them very well fed mostly with live blackworms. The female does the dance every 2-4 weeks and the male is almost always holding eggs. The problem is he does not eat enough in between and eventually caves and swallows the eggs. Any suggestions from others on to get the guy to hold the eggs till completion? They're still on the smallish side as compared to others I have seen (such as Stan's or Wendy's) so it may be the male still doesn't know how to take care of the babies yet.

Thanks Phyl. It might be that I am keeping them too well fed. The male repeatedly wants to eat but refuses. I guess the last time, the food was just too tempting. I saw the dance the female did for a few days and knew he had something in his mouth. He kept puffing up (and that was how I was able to sex him finally). On Saturday, I guess the urge was just too great, cause he puffed up really big, and then grabbed the blackworms. When I saw that, I knew he swallowed the clutch. I'll keep you posted if this pair finally learns how to deliver some babies.

Maybe once he has a clutch you should back off on feeding a bit? I'm sure the folks over on MOFIB will be of some help!

Maybe....i do tend to spoil them. Almost all my fish know the pippette is delivering live food and they will bite at it soon as it comes near the water.

Even my shrimps are "semi patient" these days. They wait a whole 30 seconds to see if I will give them shrimp/scallops before stealing the food from the sessile inverts.

The problem is not knowing whether he has a clutch or he's just not hungry at the moment. The male banggai has always been a lot more particular about eating than the female has.

Again, the male is being so picky about food. He started looking sick (turned that dark color instead of his normal silvery self). I had backed off on the live blackworms to try to force him to eat other things. Of course, he holds out. So, after 2 weeks of hunger striking I caved and started live blackworms again. And of course, he's skinny now and wouldn't you know it, the female is starting the dance again. He's not well fed enough to hold this clutch I am sure. I'm trying to target feed him as much as possible so that maybe he won't swallow the eggs again but we'll see.

Again, clutch aborted. Male decided he was too hungry. Saw him gulp down something then begin to snack on the blackworms. Guess next month will be another attempt. I'm thinking he's just too young to be havings kids.
