Can someone help identify this?

I came home today and noticed a brownish slime covering half of my goniopora. I blew off the slime to find half the polyps were dead. I began to look closely at everything in my tank and discovered this on the bottom side of a lobo I have (see picture below).

Does anyone know what this is? Any insight into the slime would be appreciated as well. I had this "slime" once before when a torch coral and kenya tree died within about a day of each other. I am new to this and would appreciate any help.

i can't really tell what I am looking at in the picture...I don't even see the lobo...sorry

generally speaking though - goni's are not a "new to the hobby" coral...emphasis on generally speaking. So I'm saying perhaps there is something amiss in the water params (which you should post) or perhaps the goni was already deteriorating before you purchased it.

does it look like the "brown jelly" at the bottom of the link?

Yes it does look like the photo at the bottom of the link. Thanks for the link. Do you have any insight into this?

The lobo is upside down. There is a cacoon looking white object to the left side of the photo. The goni is about 4-5 months in the tank now. It has beemn doing great.
I will list my parameters this eening. All are within range I did have the nitrates up to about 20ppm for maybe a day or two but are now back to near 0.

Thanks.

It looks like some type of sponge or tunicate, either of which is harmless. Whatever it is I don't think it is what caused the Goni to die.

Is it possible that another coral touched it and stung it?? Usually the slime you noticed is a byproduct of the coral dying and not what caused it to die. I would say to check all you levels including PH, ALK and CA, and also look at the possibility of another coral or fish stressing it to where it died. HTH. Good luck.

Alot of Brain corals can sting other LPS or SPS and they will slim over while dying as a result.

It's happened to me a couple of times. The latest time with a ricordea that I managed to save and it's still growing back.

Try not to put anything next to Scolys, Lobos, Brains, or even Acans.

Good luck.

it's prob brown jelly. I had it once on a torch. I tried to take it out every few days and use a turkey baster to blast off the diseased flesh. It wound up dying eventually. You may be able to do what I did but then dip it in medicine to stop the process

Thanks for the info. My tank is loaded with Acans.

Initially I did blow off the tissue with a bastor, then I thought it might be better to siphon out the remaining. Do you have any tips on a brand or type of medicine?

Thanks for your time.
