Canister filter appropriate replacement for wet/dry?

In my tank now i have a wet/dry overflow with the sump. I hate dealing with it and want to get rid of it. My dad is in the pool industry and can get me a canister filter no problem. I just want to know if that would be an appropriate replacement for the wet/dry. I know by getting rid of the wet/dry i no longer have the surface area of the bio balls but i don't know if that's a problem or not. If the canister won't work does anyone else have any other ideas?

Refugium is the way to go.

Canister is useful especially if you want to run carbon or a phos remover etc but if its not maintained it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

A canister can be a pain.
You can use your wet dry without the bio balls.
Use live rock instead.

Using a ton of live rock instead of the bio balls is going to cause the same issues you started with.

The detritus will build up on the rock just like it does on the balls.....you need macro algae more than anything.

If you are going to use live rock for your filtration then it should be in the tank.... I have a piece or two in my fuge but its there to hold in some of the algae and for the critters to do their thing on.

ynotme4886 is on the ball.
I have live rock rubble in my sump but I also use filter socks (changed every 3 days) to prevent any gunk buildup.
