canon xti 400d

i am a senior in high school and am taking a photography class and am somewhat new to photography. just got done developing my first photo today and i already know this is something i will be into. well i want to pick up a camera and was going to get a pentax K100D because i would be getting some free lenses from my father. well it turns out he changed his mind. now i was thinking about going with the xti if i wasent going to get the pentax. so i was wondering what would be some good starter lenses. i am not intrested in aquarium photography. i am like night shooting and i can't always carry a tri pod around. money is the deciding factor. where would be a good place to get this stuff for the best price? thanks in advance.

There are two school of thoughts. I have a friend who would never use zoom lenses. He uses only one or two fixed focal lenght lenses. And it works for him and the type of pics he takes. I, on the other hand, can't live without the zoom :) For my style of shooting and type of pics I am shooting I find it more then essential. And the reason I am telling this is becaues there is a considerable difference in prices between those types of lenses (and i assume you are on the budget). So, try to figure out what you would like to shoot. Try fixed focal length lenses and see how that feels.

As for where to find the equipment, assuming you are looking for the used equipment, I have been told that the following place is the BEST for good quality USED equipment:

http://www.keh.com/OnLineStore/BrandTableOfContent.aspx

If, on the other hand, you would prefer to see and feel the things before you buy them, check Adorama and B&H Photo Video stores in Manhattan. They also have good used equipment (and are the largest stores of new equipment that I have ever seen). You can browse their catalogues on the web and when you find something intresting you can go there and check it in person.

Btw, are you looking for film or digital equipment? These stores are excelent for film supplies. Staff is usually very knowledgable and helpful, but the crowds are usually big and it might not be possible for you to have a leisurely chat with them in order to learn things.

i am looking for digital. as far as new or used goes, i would rather spend 50 more bucks and get the new, the price differance between new and used isn't enough to justify that i dont know what has been done to that camera before. i can't see how working with a fixed focal lense, i cant jump 30 feet in the air to get the zoom/focus i want lol
