Cheap Seaweed for Tangs/Angels

I was looking for cheap alternatives for the pet store nori and one of the ones I tried was Kombu. It's a large flat hard seaweed. It's used for making soups/broths. Usually you boil it and allow the flavor to enhance the broth and toss the seaweed cause it's texture is very hard. None of my tangs or angels (hippo, yellow, flame, coral beauty (since sold)) ever touched it and my snails would eventually eat it.

I have some new tangs and angel in QT (powder blue, kole, regal angel). Gave it a shot. Tangs still no go. Today I finally found the fish that will eat this hard as hell seaweed. To my surprise, it's the Regal Angel on day 2 of my acquiring him. To give you an idea of how cheap kombu is....it's $4 for half a pound at Wegman's. I think online you can get this thing for $6/lb. I never bothered looking for it at an asian market cause none of my fish ate it till now but I will report how much it should cost.

With the tangs, I feed them a dried, unflavored, unroasted nori. It should be red colored. The only one I found exactly like this is a korean brand. The only type of branding it has is seoul. I pay $5 for 2.3 ounces which is roughly $32/lb. Just for comparison, the red seaweed is on sale right now from dfs for $4.09 for 20g and this is $5 for 66g. I only found this in NYC chinatown. None of the asian markets in Jersey had an unroasted one (Tangs will not like a cooked one very much...I've tried). The only other thing they have is called laver which is basically seaweed in a cake. I think this would work too but it's too sloppy for me so wouldn't bother.

Just some info for those who might want to save a bit on their tang/angel food.

I don't know what kind I have, but we got it from an asian market locally and the fish all eat it.

Phyl,

If it's green you probably have the Japanese nori for sushi which is usually unseasoned but roasted. Tangs will eat it but mine holds out for better stuff. I think I have a history of making my fish finicky.

Spoiling them rotten, eh? LOL!

Phyl,

You wouldn't believe some of my frustrations. My CB Banggai which was eating frozen like a pig doesn't even go crazy for live blackworms anymore. They have to have the correct "smell". Being live isn't enough.
My Copperband swims back and forth "begging" for live blackworms. He is willing to wait up to an hour now hoping I give him the worms. He doesn't even want live brine anymore. He will beg every time I am near the tank and can eat 20-30 of these things each feeding!! I guess I should be thankful I have a feeding specimen.
My Captive bred GSM won't even eat brine. He wants the masago.
Not even sure what the scooter is holding out for anymore. He used to go for brine, now I hardly see him pick at anything.
My false percs don't go for mysis anymore. They want cyclopeeze.

I just have to figure out what meat the regal angel wants. He "supposedly" ate Hikari mysis but so far only the kombu (which I guess I should be thankful for) and some taste testing of misc. stuff in the water column. I knew this guy would be difficult and I think my kids have grown quite attached to him in the 3 days I've had him. They call him "Rainbow Fish."
