co2 regulator issue

I'm having a problem with my co2 connected to a calcium reactor. when i connect the regulator, I leave the working pressure at zero pressure, connect the hoses and close the needle valve. when i open the co2 tank up, the working pressure needle goes off the charts even though the regulator's dial is dialed to zero pressure. i also seem to be losing pressure in the tank at a rapid pace. i don't understand what I'm doing wrong...

any advice?

thanks.

What type gauges do you have? The milwaukee/blueline type gauges are basically junk. I've been through two of them. If you don't have a reef fanatic I'd recommend you get one. The only thing you dial on those is the needle valve for the bubble count. Set it and forget it.
