D300 & D3 hit the market

Certainly is going to have a great effect on the price of a D200 though!

Amazing how much "cutting edge" Artificial Inteligence from 10-15 years ago is now proliferating common products on the market:

"Leveraging data provided by their 1,005-pixel RGB Matrix Meter, Nikon’s new SRS provides more precise subject identification, optimizing autofocus, exposure and white balance detection.

The system uses data from the 1,005-segment RGB sensor to track a moving subject along the plane of direction within the frame. Complementing the AF sensor data with the subject tracking data calculated from the RGB sensor makes it possible for the D300 to select focus with great speed and precision.

Improved subject identification performance: information from the 1,005-segment RGB sensor is used to identify the background and any human subjects, and contributes to sharp focus by detecting where the subject's face is positioned. Human subjects are given higher priority when using Auto Area A.

Enhanced Color Matrix Metering II algorithms: metering data from the 1,005-segment RGB sensor is used to detect the areas of highlights. The range of brightness to be reproduced is calculated from the results of highlight analysis and more precise exposure control can be acheived.
Light source inference uses subject distance information and integrated pattern recognition to optimize auto white balance. "

The D300 will be consumer level priced at about the price point of a D200 and well worth it. Maybe even worth the upgrade (or to keep a second body in the bag)!

Mladen? You forgot the geek glasses. Next time I see you you'll have to explain that in English!

Yes, the D3 pricing (Professional Cam) will be close to 5K... but you'd expect that. Heck you could pay 5K for some of the pro lenses (200-400 VR) let alone the body! The D300 (pro-sumer) is slated to be right around the price point the D200 though. That will, of course, put a lot of used 200s on the market as well as give the "Bleeding Edge" gang something to do with their next tax refund!

The great thing about the D300 is it is based on the same sensor and focus improvements as the pro-D3, without the full frame. It should be a SUPURB camera!

Well Ed, if you want one of the discarded bodies you'll have to start saving up for lenses! They can quickly dwarf the price of the bodies!

Shhh, don't tell him that till he buys my old D200 body. :) wink wink

Hey, I just quoted from the link you posted :p

Anyway, have you ever wondered how autofocus works on a digital SLRs? Wether using phase detection or contrast method, autofocus is based on a small number of autofocus points to either cut technical or computational complexity of the particular method. Well, we all know that, but what is the problem with that?
The catch is that, since different autofocus points, in the same image, can be over objects with substantially different distances, which one should be picked? Classic example is the taking a image of a portrait in the landscape (what I call tourist photographs :) ). So which should camera choose? The person 10' away or mountains 10 miles away? Or what if the fish you want to take pics of is moving around, back and forth in the tank? What they claim is that they have created a nice piece of AI software that analyses the overall image, determines some patterns in it (image contains faces, or people, or moving objects), and using same rules gives the priority to some focal points. So, for example, the algorithm is supposed to be able to figure out if any of the focal points lies on a subjects face gives the priority to that focal point, even though every other point has nicely measured the distant mountain in the background. What THEY also claim, is that once the algorithm acquires a target it can track it in 3D (sounds like a cruise missile ;D ). What that means is that if it moves form one focal point to another they can both have the priorities. It also means, that if theobject is moving towards and away from the camera, that movement can be determined and anticipated so that autofocus will automatically adjustthe the lenses to continuously keep the subject in focus (case of your fish moving around your tank). Coooool :)

what i really want is a sweet lense :)
& if i said no u know i would be lying !
i hope some one we know does not see this & get more confused !
do i buy the D80,D200 or D300 :p
