Deep sand beds... You have one???

Just wanted some info on your DSB set up if you have one, to get some ideas on what works for some people and what doesn't. What's your inhabitants? How much flow? How much light? Sand depth? Do you filter the water going in or does your overflow fill it? Positives and negatives since you started it? Etc...

Over the last 15 years or so I've tried several different approaches to DSBs. My DSBs were usually 4" deep placed in the tank after the rock and before the water.
I've had horseshoe crabs, goatfish and sleeper gobies at different times to "stir" the sand. I even stirred the sand manually in the mid 90s because that was recommended. All had disappointing results (algae blooms, cyano, etc..).
The best results for me were with a mix of Carib Sea, Agramax Live & Southdown playsand with cerith snails and 2 Tigertail cucumbers and no manual stirring.

I agree. Let it do its thing. From what I understand with a deep sand bed you do not want sand mixers. Mixers are what you don't want with a DSB.

Yes I have a 4-5 inch sandbed layed down after placing rock in the tank. Oolite (sp) sized. Really no problems thus far. I do occasionally clean parts of the edges but that is it. I have some conchs and other snails that is it.
