DIY Filter Sock Holder!

I had purchase this 35G Custom-built Sump made of Acrylic. Happy with it, but never thought of filter sock holders at that time. Anyway, I have went to several places looking for someone to built me filter sock holders to Accommodate my sump, but the prices was "ridiculous".

Then I found a member and friend selling two acrylic filter sock holders. However, they did not fit on my sump. So I decided to make my own out of eggcrate & cable ties.....does the job and it cost me in material a couple of dollars.

Great idea, I may have to try that out as well...I haven't been using filter socks, mainly because I couldn't figure out how to implement on into my system.

I am trying to come up with a design for a filter sock holder myself. The area of the sump is 17" X 14" and the pvc pipe is centered to enter the sump. The original design was over a drip plate. I am wondering if eggcrate will be strong enough to hold a filter sock if it is placed in the center of a piece of eggcrate 17" X 14". If anyone has another suggestion I would appreciate it.

You could simply tie it to the pipe/tube with the rubber band as I have done.

That's a good idea too...sometimes you overlook the most simple solutions!

Won't the weight put to much strain on the pipes?

I am assuming ypour overflow's pipe end is submerged (if it isn't it would be better if it is for several reasons). In that case there is no significant weight. Quite the contrary, the sock will have quite a positive buoyancy from all the air trapped into the overflow pipe.

It's a sock that goes over your drain pipe into your sump. It catches any larger particles in your water.

And also helps with micro bubbles

gotcha. i guess it is the same kind of bag used for carbon and stuff for a canister filter?

Not really. Carbon uses a mesh sock while these socks are more like a cotton meterial.
