also, i was looking into building my own skimmer... i know it would cost a hell of alot less, however i dont know if it would really give me the improvement im looking for. has anyone done this? does it pay off? could i use something simple such as a maxi jet as a RC pump?

what size tank are you trying to build this for?
It is possible to build a skimmer. I looked into doing this a few years back, but the plans I found on the net were mostly for smaller air driven skimmers, or small venturi skimmers.
I will say the skimmer design is very subtle, and minor changes can make major differences in performance. If you go the DIY route here, expect to rebuild the thing a few times before you get it right. Also, build it so it can be completely taken apart for cleaning.
