Dow flake and such

I could not find DowFlake when I started using Randy’s two part a couple years ago. I ended up buying Preston Driveway Heat, and I’ve been using that since. It’s anhydrous, and therefore you only need two cups per gallon to make up the calc part. Randy does mention Driveway Heat as a substitute to DowFlake.

I’m not sure what "a&h" are, but if it has anything to do with the alk and mag part of Randy’s Recipe, here’s what I use:

Magnesium: I bought a bag of MAG Flakes from a local hardware store and Epsom Salts from the local drug store.

Alk: Sam’s Club sells a 13.5 lb bag of baking soda for like seven bucks (or thereabouts).

Hope that helps.

I use Prestone Heat also. No problems. I buy the food grade A & H at Walmart. I think it's $1.50 for a pound or so. I haven't seen Dowflake around for awhile.

Just saw a pretty good size bag at shoprite in bordentown. If I had to guess I'd say 20lbs maybe. Just under $10. Otherwise I've seen it readily available at lowes.

Can mag flake still be found?

John, again, it’s been a few years, but I purchased it from Edison Millworks and Hardware (a True Value Hardware store) located at 9 Old Post Road, Edison, just off of Woodbridge Avenue…..(732) 985-2700. Check True Value stores in your area.

Where do you get the prestone heat? A&h arm and hammer baking soda. Thanks for the replies
Kurtis

I’ve seen Prestone Driveway Heat in a number of stores this winter….including Home Depot. Get it now, because they’ll be putting out the summer stuff before you know it.

LOL on A&H…..and I actually looked at the big bag I got at Sam’s to check the weight, and still didn’t make the connection.

I'll check it out. I got enough BRS to get me through the year but I think I'm gonna switch it up next time.

There are 2 grades of baking soda. One for cleaning and another for food grade. I don't know of it makes abig difference but the food grade one is certified as pure.

Randy calls for 1 1/4 cups of Dow flake and 20% less if using prestone driveway heat. You stated that you use 2 cups per gallon of prestone. Just want to make sure I mix this right.
Oops just re-read it it calls for 21/2 sorry
Ok re-read again recipe 2 calls for 11/4 cups, anyone using recipe 2 with prestone driveway heat?
Thanks
Kurtis

I use recipe 1, which calls for 2 ½ cups of Dow Flakes. However, if you use an anhydrous form of calcium, such as Preston Driveway Heat, use 20% less……which equals 2 cups. Similarly with recipe 2, if you use an anhydrous form, use 20% less. So if it calls for 1 ¼ cups of Dow, use only 1 cup of Preston…..n'est-ce pas?

Were do you get mag flake from? What is it called in local stores, I was always interested in doing this method but could never find all the ingredients.

It's called MAG Flakes.

Under $20 for a life-time supply.

Yeah right, for your dingy tank there :p - LOL.
Bob has a 265G with a 75G attached to it and a decent size sump.

Bob

I think it is time you started a thread in Tale of a tank.

P.S ==> Please do not take anything seriously what Paul says. He will always have a hidden agenda in whatever he says or does ;).

J/K Bob, Paul is the go to guy for these kind of DIY stuff.

Hey Sunny, need I remind you that I’m an old fart, and as such, I meant my life-time…..which, if I’m lucky, is only a few more years.

So I have changed my will, that upon my death you, (Sunny of Monroe), receive the remaining supply on MAG Flakes that I have….and that is currently 50 pounds minus five cups. Now if only I could live until all the MAG Flake is consumed! Again, I still have the first gallon of mag I made a few years ago.

Lol I have been meaning to start my little story of my system... I am probably the king of killing and rebuilding. Having kids and neglecting my tank... it will be like a noveI past, current, & future.. wanna try this instead of buying it from bulk reef supply. I think it should save me some money. I am hoping to start putting some sps back in soon. :D
