drilled tank

i am getting my 50g drilled, i don't fully understand the need for overflow boxs' in/external. are they necessary, what do they do.
would it not be wise to just have the two holes on the top back wall of the tank one with a strainer and one for the return. or get the bottom of the tank drilled and have it set up kinda like this

Hi Mookie...the main advantage of an overflow box is that since its serrated top is below the tank waterline, it actually skims the surface water of the tank preventing any surface slime from builing up. The disadvantage is that it takes up room inside the tank.

On my 135 Reef tank I have 2 overflow boxes each with an outflow and return standpipe. I had to modify the outflow standpipes to the Durso type described in your reference thread and it has worked perfectly for several years now.

Drilling the back of your 50 is preferable to drilling the bottom unless you plan to install check valves and/or very high standpipes to prevent the tank from draining in case of a pump/power failure. With the drain on the back of the tank, you may get a slight gurgling sound at the strainer intake if the water flow is too high. However, if the tank will be covered it won't be a problem.
