Evaporation

I use Kalk water as my top off to mantain PH. In the last week I noticed a drop In my PH to about 8.09.

Further investigation pointed me to the root cause. My tank Evaporation has been reduced dramatically.

My tank water volume is about 150G. 3 weeks ago I was averaging 2 Gallons a day, and in the last week it has dropped to less than 4 gallons. Given that lighing and temperature are constant (reef is kept at 79 +/- .4) What could have produced such a drastic change?

I noticed that environmental factors affect evaporation for me. Do you use ceiling fans, have the heat or AC on? I too noticed a reduction in evaporation lately which I think is because of the temp in my area. I do not have the heat or AC turned on yet. However, on hotter days I notice more evaporation but cooler days seems less. On hotter days I keep the cabinet door open and turn on my ceiling fan. Also, at night when all lights are off I open the canopy, I have net covers. This helps prevent the evaporation a little; I would guess 1/2g to 1g max.
I will have to check tank temp and evaporation when I finally breakdown and turn the AC on.

House Is always at 73 during the day 68 during the night. The sump is in the basement and temperature is pretty constant at about 69 degrees. The only difference has been that It has been faily humid in the basement due to all the rain but I dont think is that much to cause such a drastic change

If you have a newer furnace it will remove the humidity from the air, now you probably are not running either the furnace or the AC so your air is more humid. That would certainly account for some of it. Have you changed the position of any power heads...less surface agitation would create less evaporation.

I agree with everyone else. The humidity in the air now especially with a week of straight rain will affect you evaporation rate. I noticed it on my system as well.
