any suggestions on what to try to feed finicky pipefish....i tried small frozen mysis, cyclopseze, laguna mix and coral food cubes....and I'm running out of ideas... thanks, tony
What kind of tank setup do you have and how long has it been running. My pipefish doesn't eat frozen food.. their mouths are very very small. He does however pick on little things on the rock and in crevices. He's most likely not gonna take to frozen. If your tank is established you shouldn't have a problem with him finding live, very small things to eat.
thanks mike, its a 30 gal experiment, with a hang on fuge and cheap skimmer. been going about 3 months....good coraline on glass and rocks, but i wasn't sure if the bugs were enough to keep them well fed
They need a large supply of live foods such as mysids, copepods, amphipods and enriched live brine shrimp. What kind of pipes do you have? Some can be trained to frozen foods easier than others. Also it is best to train them to frozen foods in a bare bottomed QT tank as it is easier to keep an eye on what and how much they are eating.
If you have a LFS that sells live brine shrimp, that can be a good thing to try to get the fish to eat. Also, since they have small mouths, you can try newly hatched brine shrimp. Eggs are generally available.
You could also try some of the live pods stuff that that is being sold.
If you are lucky, you might be able to get them over to frozen food, but it's often impossible. Still, keep trying.
Didn't want to start another new thread before I searched, but I'm thinking about picking up a dragon-faced pipefish. Finally got my two Fiji Devil Damsels out of the tank so there is peace.
Are these guys easier than others to train onto frozen foods? Or are there easier species out there to train onto them?
The dragon faced take pretty easily to frozen cyclop-eze and frozen mysis. If you have to buy live foods for them it is going to get expensive fast.
Your best bet is to set them up in a bare bottom QT tank when you first get them and get them trained to frozen foods before they go into your display tank. In a bare tank it is very easy to see if they are taking the frozen foods. Once they are in your display tank it will be almost impossible to monitor their feedings.
whats up Tony,
buy live brine and feed them a little each day. you can usually keep the brine alive in the container for about a week. thats what i did for my cuttlefish babies. Trop has live brine and so does 88pet world on the border of brick & pt.pleasant
