OK so i dont post much on here cause i really dont know much lol but i thought for all those that have this skimmer might enjoy this. So ever since i purchased my corallife super skimmer 220, i wasnt never really pleased with the skim at all, some times it would over flow and go crazy and most times it barely skimmed. so on a routine cleaning of my skimmer i noticed the shaft in the needle wheel was broken in 3 places, i called corallife and spoke with a rep, and asked him if there were any mods i can do to get a better skim since i wasnt really impressed, besides the more popular mods that we all now, he told me i can actually increase the pump up to 950gph, so i went out and got me a mag 9.5 needlewheel pump hooked it up and within minutes i noticed such and EXTREME DIFFERENCE in color of skim, foam production, i was completely amazed! i now have a new hope for this skimmer, it finally is a SUPER SKIMMER with the upgrade to the pump.

I've been running these skimmers for years. Had the same problem that you had initially, the odd fluctuations etc.
I found a couple things:
1: don't completely scrub out the skimmer (like the instructions tell you to)everytime you clean it. I just wipe the collection cup funnel with a papertowl, and only actually clean the entire skimmer every coupld of months. If you completely break the skimmer down and clean it completely, you have to "shut it down" to do it, so when you put back online, the skimmer just became brand new again and has to break in all over again.
2: It's more important to keep the pump inlet clean then it is the actual skimmer.
3: Ditch the "silencer" and extend the airline tube up over the top of the collection cup. Yes, it will make more of a "sucking" noise, but you'll get more air to the pump because that stupid little silencer restricts the air more than it quiets the thing.
4: When you think you have the level of the bubbles where you want it? Dial it back just a tiny hair. It always increases when youre not looking.
I am curious about that mag 9.5 though, as I have one of these sitting in the closet....
