Glass-Holes Overflow Experience

Getting ready to start the next build - 87 gallon custom tank, 5 feet long. It is not reef-ready so the first thing we are going to do is drill and install an overflow. I’ve been looking at Glass-Holes overflow. Does anyone have experience with these overflows? They are very reasonable. However, the one concern I have are the bulkheads…they are installed backwards.

Yes it is installed backwards which makes no diff if you think about it. This will not leak its still sealing the exact same way just in a different direction.

The concern is that its now sealing 4 surfaces (4 leak points instead of 2) glass to bulk head then glass to overflow box.

Since its mounted so high up I dont see it as a problem since there is lower presure up high. Also since you are using about the same tightening presure for 2 seals instead of 1 they supply you with the grease to make sure it will seal properly when tightening down, very smart of them. The two seals have to now share the clamping presure that one seal would normally have applied to it.

One would think you could just tighten it down more instead of using the grease but since drilling the tank could cause tiny micro cracks around the edge of the drilled holes in the glass the extra force would cause the crack to run and crack a bad crack that would ruin the tank.

I can only guess that no one has tried or uses a Glass-Holes overflow. Well, I’ve just ordered the 1500 gph overflow for the 87 gallon build that I’m about to start. I guess I’ll include my experiences in the Tale of The Tank thread that will be eventually started. I’m impressed by the attitude and pricing of this company. Very quick to respond to questions about their products. Would love to work for them. It just sounds like fun! Hopefully the drilling (1/2 inch glass) starts in a couple of days. And by the way, still not sure if it’s tempered…so this might be a short build. Let’s hope not.

bump..i would like to know also..anyone who has/seen these GH overflows, are they quiet? i was looking at the 700gph setup for my 50g

As Merv said, I used the 700gph overflow kit on my 33L. I like it a lot. I is very quiet and the kit includes everything you need to install it, including the diamond wholesaw bit. It also has a very low profile so it doesn't get in the way. You can see pics of it in my build thread.

Have you looked at the coast-to-coast setup? When I finally pickup the 46g bowfront, and find time, I am considering drilling it and setup an overflow. So far, I am pretty sold on the coast-to-coast setup - http://beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx. This brand looks pretty easy, but it looks like a HOB overflow accept you do not have to worry about the U tube.

I guess it's more of a convince factor?

If you do a search,someware I remember reading something about a way of checking to see if glass is tempered or not using polarized sun glasses or something. I wish I could remember more but you know how OFs can't remember poop! :

I still have the problem of not having polarized anything. Maybe I’ll see if I can buy a cheap pair of polarized sunglasses.

Anyway, the glass holes shipment is lost in the mail. They've told me if I don't get it by Monday, they'll ship another.

The Glass-Holes overflow arrived today. Wooohooo!

I’m impressed. I finally see how this thing works, and supposedly is quiet. It has baffles! The other thing I like is that it is only 6 x 12 x 2 inches, and rated for 1500 gph. Won’t take up much room in the tank. Can’t wait to drill this little puppy and see how it actually performs. They were kind enough to custom cut the bulkheads to fit the 1/2 inch glass on the tank.

wish i read this post earlier. i used this same overflow on a 46 gallon bow front works great so far. been running for about 7 months

We took advantage of the warm weather yesterday and popped two holes in the glass.  Good news, the glass wasn’t tempered.  Not having polarized film, onefish commented that if this tank shatters, will just buy a new 75.  With drill in hand, we popped two holes into the back of the tank.  I guess we’ll have to start a tall of the tank thread now.
