I don’t know what is going on with my fish wanting to commit suicide. I lost a Coral Beauty about a week ago, found “extra crispy” on the floor behind the tank. Today I walk into the fish room and there is my Starry Blenny about five feet from the tank, catching some air. I immediately picked up the shriveled little guy, thinking that he had to be dead, and put him back in the tank. He sank to the bottom, rested for about five minutes, breathing heavily, and then swam into the rocks. I have never had a problem with fish jumping (except a Six Line Wrasse, which are known jumpers). My only guess is the introduction of a pair of Blue Throat Triggers. They must be spooking these other fish. When I first put them in, they were very skitterish, darting into the rocks, but now, when I’m in the room, they seem to be just fine. So I have no idea why the Blenny decided to carpet surf today.
Now if my fish want to commit suicide, they will have to try harder. Today I quickly made a box out of ¼ inch plywood that is 16 ½ inches high. They will have to be exceptional jumpers to get out now. I know it is ugly, but only temporary until I get around to building a nice canopy. I don’t want any more dead fish.
