Set up the 14g 1-1/2 ago. I have it set up in the basement right now so I can surprise my son on Christmas. One thing I didn't take into account though was how much colder it is down there than up in the family room (final destination). It's a finished basement, but where it's hidden it's only about 66 degrees down there. During the initial cycle, is it really beneficial enough for me to run out and buy something like a 50w heater?

I tried that once with a 50W heater in a 10G and basically it stayed on all the time and heated the tank only about 1 degree abover ambient room temp. As the space is rather cold, you might need to overspec the heater to 100W or even 150W (wouldn't recommend this high on a 14G though). The bacteria will grow out faster in a warmer tank so will accelerate the cycle.
