hermet killed my snail, how long for shell

so my hermet crab killed a snail, i am assuming to rent out some space in the snails shell. for some reason though, the hermets wouldnt eat the snail. so rather then the dead snail fowling my water, i took out the shell with the dead snail.

i put it in a plastic cup outside because my wife would appreciate me keeping it inside.

my reasoning for this is because my hermet decided to kill the snail, i figured i if the hermet wanted the shell so bad i would give it to him. how long do you think i should keep it outside for it to dry up and decay away before i could put it back in for the hermet crab.

i figured i would boil the shell for a while after it was outside to make sure it was nice and clean before putting it back in, but i dont want to put it in too soon

I just leave them in and let nature take it's course. I guess you could dig the rest of snail out with screwdriver and rinse it out

i was worried about leaving it in there with only a 14 gallon tank

As long as you have hermits they will kill snails. I have it happen in my 12g and don't take them out. Erring on the side of caution is a good thing, but you should be fine. The only thing you can do is add some empty shells to keep them away from your snails.

i used to have like 20 hermit crabs and like 5 snails and they all went fine for me but my dam trigger ate everything but 2 snails and 2 hermit crabs and he also ate about 25 longneck clams and 4 good size mussels in about 2 weeks tops! god hes a pain

yeah, i am going to the pet store this week to get some empty shells.

don't be surprised if they still go for the snails. As a crab the choice between detritus and escargot is just too easy....

i was going to go crabless in my tank but added a handful I got for free from MACNA/coralmorphologic. Tiny little guys seemed ok...(famous last words)

Ah even the little ones are killers, it's in their blood. I started out with mostly small ones and a few big ones. Just this week i took out 2 huge ones and put them in my sump. They were wearing 3 $ turbo shells. They grow up quick. In the long run it's just all part of reefin ;D

I put shells in and they have gone for them.

You can also boil the dead snail and the guy will slide out.

I have tons of shells if anyone wants them, I am in Little Silver.
