How hot is too hot ??

:-\ Ok I got my new pump running now for 2 days and my temp has never been this high 81.7 . I only have 6 fish and 1 candy anemone. My concern is whats too hot ? , and besides a chiller which I guess I will need soon what can I do to cool it down? I am currently floating ice in a baggy till I get some ideas.

Thanks folks, Chuck P

Are you running an open top tank? What type of lighting? Do you have fans on your lighting/canopy?

You can try putting a small clip on desk fan on your sump or tank. It will evaporate more water but will drop the tank by 2-3 degrees at least.

THANKS , I have an open top 180 gallon tank with 3 x 250 watt metal haildes, its a hamilton technology fixture that sits on the top of my tank it has two factory fans on the fixture.

Do you have a canopy over the lights? Do you have a heater in the tank? If so what is it set at? What was the tank temp before adding the new pump? What pump are you running?

no canopy , but the lights are housed in a factory fixture. unplugged the heater it was set at 76 and usually the temp was around 77 78 before the pump. i just installed a panworld 200.

I'm puzzled. External pumps don't normally increase tank temperatures. Unless the pump is adding so much heat inside the stand that it is heating the water. Try opening the stand doors and putting a fan either blowing in or out to get rid of any heat build up.

ok thanks I turned off the lights and floated 2 small bags of ice. I am trying to prep the tank for corals, i want to try to avoid and or take care of equipment problems before i get the corals. I will open the doors and try a fan thanks again. What are the general thoughts on a chiller do most guys here run them ???

the temp is not a problem as long as it is steady, if it changes alot then it might be a problem, i had my tank at 84 degrees for a month because my thermometer was off and everything was fine, and now it usually gets up to 82.
