When adding a coral what steps do you follow and over what time period? Is it the same as with fish? After you place a coral in your tank how long do you wait for it to open up before moving it to a different location?
That depends on the coral. Some I dip and some I don't because you're not supposed to. As for placement start at the bottom and adjust after 2 or 3 days, its what I do.
If this is a newly cycled tank, start with easy stuff like softies (zoas, mushrooms, leathers etc.)
Once you feel more comfortable your corals are living, you can try harder stuff like LPS/SPS.
Do make sure you have some good test kits to test for some critical parameters, Hanna Nitrate/Phosphate/Alk/Calc
Depending on the husbandry of your water, you should be able to sustain the corals with standard weekly water changes
I always do the same thing with all corals. I dip everything that goes into my system.
- Once corals take a quick look at the bag with a light to make sure everything is ok.
- I float the coral bags in my sump while I prepare the dip.
- Get a half gallon bucket. Put in 15 drops of coral rx pro with water from tank.
- Place corals in bucket, and while there I swish the frag by hand in the water or I use my turkey baster to constantly blow around the coral.
- I usually cut of frag plugs and remount them on new plugs. If I can't do that I scrape as much of the frag plug as I can with a razor and my magnifying glass to make sure no pests on coral.
- Rinse with tank water and in they go.
- Then refill the amount of saltwater I took out with fresh water.
I float for 15-20mins in a QT tank, dip with Potassium Chloride and iodine, put the frag on a new plug then place it in QT for about 60 days for observation before adding to my display or frag tank.
Float bag to adjust to temp about 15-20mins. Remove coral and water and pour into a small container. I use ME coral dip and drip a bunch without counting drips, until there's a strong flowery smell. Leave in about 15 minutes. Remove coral, and then swish and swirl coral in a cup of tank water. Place in frag rack in tank at bottom of tank. Keep rack and raise slowly over the next week or two. After about 2 weeks, I remove frag off plug if able, then mount onto rockwork.
