I cut a new fish tank in half-Frag Tank build

So, I could not find a 36” or 48” frag tank at any LFS near me. I ended up getting a 40g breeder from petco for $53...I have to put my frag tank in a weird spot and I have T5’s going over it, so it couldnt be too tall...I decided to try my luck at removing a few inches off the tank.

I used a glass cutter to score it and a propane torch to crack it.ofcourse it didn’t give me a perfect line, but I was able to get close after removing some more glass. Now it’s 36x18x12

long story short, it can be done...but it’s not fun.
Only got one cut and that was because @DangerDave jinxed me.thanks bud.

I love this sort of stuff congrats on a nice mod. Wow that initial cut was kind of rough LOL but the finished product looks great. Those 40 breeders is so cheap that I’m going to convert one into a 24 x 24 frag tank only having to buy the bottom piece from a glass shop my guess is the total cost of the 24 x 24 x 10 frag tank 80 bucks. Looking forward to see the final product

Cutting glass is a weird thing if you don’t score a deep enough it doesn’t break on the line if you score too deep it pops as you’re cutting and when you break it it becomes really rough it’s all about the touch and the sound it makes that crazy sound when you’re dragging it across the glass and if it makes the sound all the way across it seems to cut really smooth it’s a learning experience but fun trying. I have one of those ones that you fill with oil it probably cost a good amount of money but I bought it so long ago I don’t remember

Shelve brackets in for Mock up...need to paint them black.

Frag tank update...almost ready for water...maybe tomorrow! Need a few more fittings and should be good to go.

Looking good, are you going to run it lights out for a while? I think I made a mistake tuning the light on right away. None of those surfaces have any bacteria and developed algae right away. I think next time I do an add on tank I’ll dose bacteria and go lights out for a couple weeks. Seems like prime surface area for bad stuff to grow on.
