kalk dosing advice

ok, hirobo has me on a kalk mission.

i want some info, i have so many questions floating around my head i hope i can get them all out! i am just wondering the best way to dose kalk. without gettin crazy and expensive. i was thinking about using a diy kalk resevoir. and dosing during the night. which in turn would also aid in top off.

im guessing i need a pump on a timer? how would i know how much to add using this methods. i know how much calcium uptake i have being used right now, which is almost 10 per day.

i know im leaving some questions out. help would be greatly appreciated!! or even ways that you dose kalk would be very helpful too! any details you could give me would be awesome!!

i am not advocating this method but i spent the dollars on the PM kalk reactor group buy we had a while back and jury rigged it to my ATO. So when the ato tops off - it routes thru the kalk and dumps the kalk in.

I know you're supposed to set the timer on the reactor to stir every so often - but I don't bother.

i don't have any nice corals so take this advice with a grain of salt! Knock on wood the maxima clam has been fine with this method for the past 10 months. Though perhaps it's fine due to other reasons - who knows.

My ph is 8.4~8.6

so if i set a timer at night for say 10 min with a slow drip would that be sufficient? i gues i would have to test the calcium level after this to tell if thats enough kalk??

Yes, but by using a dosing calculator you would know about where the levels are and how much to add. For example .7g of saturated water would your levels about +7 ppm CA and +1 dKh (80g water volume). Which reminds me... what is your Alk uptake?

There are some reefers on N-R that manually mix kalk in one bucket and once it settles add it to their ATO with success as well.

I also bought the kalk reactor from group buy and have 2 timers one for stirring kalk. one for ato. although I love the automation, In retrospec I would just put kalk in ato bucket and call it a day. This is how I used to do it and I don't see a big change now that I have the reactor.

i just take a gallon bottle fill it with water put a lil air valve about 2 inches from the bottom and mix two tblspoons of kalk let it sit for 24 hrs and drip it over night its bin working for over a year now i do a drip a sec or 2 drips a second
