ooooohhh I vote for a late spring/summer members meeting

I recently broke down my 40g and upgraded to a 150g. Once I have the tank ready for acros, I'll make a trip down! I already have 6 from the list above that I want lol

I hope to have a meeting in March; just need to settle in better and get old house ready for sale.

So keep an eye out.

Whenever you’re ready I’ll make you up something very nice.

Pretty awesome collection - wish I could grow acros reliably. I only have had luck with TSM blueberry yum yum so far; although just picked up JF Neophobia at the frag fest. Hopefully doesn’t become another in a long list of casualties.

Thanks Ryan. There’s a lot of variables to consider. If you’re struggling with sps, the best thing you can do is find a mentor. Try to find someone local to with nice acros and mimic the way they run their systems. Besides that, getting a high resolution MS-ICP test is invaluable. It will tell you major and minor element accumulations and deficiencies that make or break tank success. Don’t get cheaper oes tests. They can’t read many of the potentially toxic metals until The levels are deadly. If you ever find your way down by me and see my tanks, I’ll give you 30 years of acro-keeping in a nutshell lol.

Sounds great, I really appreciate it. I’ve had good luck with most SPS (many species of monti, stylophora, pocillopora, anacropora, cyphastrea, and pavona). Just acro are super hard. I’ve even killed the green slimer.

I have run FM ICP-OES in the past and ordered my first ICP-MS last week from Oceamo. Maybe that will do the trick…

Oceamo MS is the best. Take a close look at metals and the doc number is very helpful. Usually very low numbers of doc have poor acro success. Here’s the difference from OES resolution (first pic) to MS resolution (second pic). These are different older tests from Ati but you can see what registers and what doesn’t.

I personally had copper messing up my acros at one point and oes showed undetectable. A good buddy of mine was losing his 3 tank 900g system because of tin that showed undetectable on oes kits. Oes is inadequate IMO, if spending the money and putting in the effort to make sure your parameters are on point.

Where are you purchasing the Oceanmo MS tests? I only see this link Oceamo ICP-MS Seawater Analysis | Oceamo
When I select county, there is no option for USA, unless I am missing something.

It’s on the reef moonshiners website. It’s the only place to buy them. Sucks because it’s a flat rate of $17 shipping. A good alternative is the Ati-ms. Just as reliable and precise on the minors, it’s just missing the DOC number that Oceamo gives you.

Thanks that’s super informative! Have you seen any comparison between various vendors ICP-MS results?
I haven’t sent multiple tests of the same water sample out to compare, but I have used most of them. When I see copper and tin as NA I move on. Metal toxicity is my main reason for sending ICP, and I do correct major deficiencies/accumulations but I don’t try to maintain moonshine levels on everything.

just curious, are you running moonshiners, or just mentioning them for the focus on traces?

i'm working on a list for you from what you have available and where i'm at with my build and making space. i'll also be better of if i ask for your advice on what i've had success with and haven't had success with so far.

I did do moonshine for a year but kind of stopped.I still use their affiliated Oceamo ICP test, and will still use some of their supplements for correcting major deficiencies that show up on ICP. I don’t dose the full line of 20 bottles lol. On a daily basis I dose iodine, iron, and manganese since I’m always very low .

As a whole I think the focus on trace is blown out of proportion. Many of these elements are depleted or precipitated from the water without evidence of being utilized by corals. Barrium is a prime example, and this is one that you would go through a lot of. This is how I ended up focusing on the major elements that actually do something.
