looking to purchase a camera.....

what is a descent camera to start out with i dont really wanna break the bank but want something that i can take some good pictures with.

what is breaking the bank... $300? $500? $800? ... or $2000?

If you tell us a budget it's easier to answer the question.

there is a thread on "point and shoot" cameras - take a look....though I gotta tell ya - with my point and shoot - I have to take like 20 pics to get one I think can be submitted to POTM...

Just a little while ago Dell was selling 10.1 MP Rebels for $3xx, body only or $419 with a lens.

Heckuva deal, but unfortunately over.

between 400-500 i have a descent digital camera i use for work but i wasnt something that will be good for taking coral shots.

Buying a camera with high megapixels is not what u should be worrying about.
A camera's lens, circuitry and sensor not to mention your mastery of lighting, composition and the camera's controls are far more important factors.
look in to the sensor rather then the megapixel u will be able to take better pictures.
I'm a Nikon guy so for ur price range i would suggest a Nikon D40 it does not get
any better then having an digital SLR where u can swap out the lens.
i got my macro lens on ebay used & it works great.
here is a link for u.

Like steve said, megapixels is not everything.

You can have a 12 megapixel camera and the pictures will be bad. Its in the lens and the CMOS electonics.

Unlike Steve I have canon cameras. I've had the rebel xti and love it. I have an image stapilizer lens and a telephoto macro lens. Stick with Nikon and Canon they have the best lenses and electronics.

The rebel xti should be coming down in price as the new model came out.

Have you tried to enter the POTM with some pictures.

Send in a picture or 2 to photos@njreefers.org

I have a rebel xti too and I have yet to win the contest... :-\

& remember never take pictures on angles they will never come out right.

I have, no lie, 12 digital cameras.  I have had them since they first came out.  I bought the first NIKON digital SLR that was built for consumers, the D100.  The body cost me 2,000 at B&H photo NY.  But for a point and shoot, I always look for a few things important to me.  THe lens, a Carl Zeiss lens is awesome on a little camera, so is the Leica lens, the optics are great.  I look for a large optical zoom. At least 3x. Dont pay any attention to the phrase digital zoom, only zoom using the optics of the lens.  4x optical is great, keeping the camera pocket size, also important to me.  THe battery life, that is number two in importance next to the lens, for me.  Double A's are great, they sell the rechargables that are awesome, and you can keep a bunch in your bag if you run out of juice, as I once did in Cosumel Mexico with a small Casio underwater digital setup.  I dont like buying a $50 canon battery as I have had to do with one of my cameras, just to have a spare.  The LAST thing I look for is megapixels!  They are only good for enlarging the photo.  You can make a POSTER with a 5 megapixel camera and still not see the pixels.  My old 1.6 megapixel could make an enlargement up to 8x10 and still be crisp.  In the high numbers of megapixels cameras are coming out with, it shouldnt be a concern.  3.2 megapixel is all I ever need.  Check out my point and shoot photos in the photography link, they are all from an old 3.2 megapixel panasonic with a Leica lens and Lumix electronics.  It was around a hundred twenty dollars. good luck

when i was at the mall yesterday i stopped by ritz camera they had a few things onsale i believe one was a sony and the other a cannon both for around 550 i guess i'll just have to sit back and do some research before i buy one.

LOL. Quite a laundry list, Lithivm!

I've had my share too (though not as many). First was a Canon AE-1. Then came the consumer-slightly-more-than-a-point-n-shoot bunch. I had a few Olys until I went dSLR my recent bout of Nikon. I love my Nikons. The ergonomics are fantastic, everything is just a button press away with plenty of functionality being available without hitting the menus.

A D40 is a great place to start. For the Macro lens, it doesn't need to be auto-focus nor have VR/IS since you should be using it on a tripod and be manually focusing it. The used market is a great place to start for that.

be careful on ebay. chech out amazon, bh, and adorama. adorama has a refurbished section. got my xti refurbished, it might as well be brand new. don't just buy a nikon because every 1 around you has one. check out canon and pentax too.

Of course if you get a Nikon you'll have plenty of help using it. Get a pentax and you won't have anyone around here to look to for answers. ;D
