hey guys I have been running in to problems with my tank and lossing acro colonies. For some reason I can not keep a stable kh. The reasding is always around 7 and my mag level was around 850 so the last 2 days I have been using bright wells mag power soluation to get in up. the level to day was around 980 . Not sure why this happened. I do weeklly water changes and use a good salt.

Magnesium is important in maintaining alkalinity. Also important in calc levels as well.

Reefkeeping Magizine has a real good explanation of this whole Mg /Alk/Ca/pH thing. I don’t have the time to search it out, but suggest you go to www.reefkeeping.com and search on Alkalinity. But you need to get Mg and Ca up there and then the Alk.

it does not seem off enough to wipe your acros also look for other things like red bugs, ph day/night swings since your kh is a lil low. Maybe take your water to the lfs and see if your tests are acurate.

yeah I did a water change today the tank looks better just took another reading on all levels o phos nitrate around 5-10. kh around 6-7 amd cal 450. but the mag was still low so I went to the reef and got sechams mag buff it buffed it to 1560. now I'n bringing up the kh. I think this is the last time I will use bright wells products. I was also prob having ph issues from the low kh

Most likely your Ph issues are from all of the buffer you've been using to bring up your Alk. I would recommend that you dose less and do larger, more frequent water changes until the water parameters are back in line.

Your mag is low. I think it would be incorrect to say that your alk being at 7 would be the cause for this. My tank is steady at 7 and I have no issues with corals thriving or coloring up. I would not think that your KH would be the issue. What salt are you using? The reason I ask is I use tropic marin pro reef and that mixes at KH 7 CAL 380 and MAG 1300. If you are using a salt that mixes lower than might wanna switch salts or adjust levels during water changes before putting water into tank. just a thought.

What is your tank temp? Maybe look at that. how fast did your acros seem to die off? when you say wipe out do you mean tissue is comming completly off or are they just bleaching??
