March 2024

I have basically the same thread going on at humble fish but I figured I'd post some stuff here.

Around this time next year I plan to buy a house and build out a small coral farm.
I plan to run everything off of 60 breeders. Silly, but more economical.

right now lumber is mostly back to normal and I had some free time this week

this relic is going to be stage one of a gravity fed system.

I may be asking you to build me a stand for my 50 cube !!

Some more progress I'm at about $130 so far. Second stand built, bondoed and oil primed.

hoping to spray them both with prep rite some time next week

This is only the 3rd and 4th stand I've ever built. The two in my living room are 100% wrapped with plywood. I didn't want to go that route. I want the stands open underneath as it's not going to be somewhere where my kids have access to. After I built the frame I realized that some sort of sheathing was gonna be needed.

rather than wrapping the entire stand I wrapped it with 4 inch strips of ply. ply was all scrap.

good resistance to lateral force.

In the meantime I'm looking for a big big skimmer. Something rated for 500-600 gallons

This is what I have my eye on currently

This is a great thread. Good luck with the build. I think the zoo med frag tanks for around $130 are a great frag tank.

I know that was definitely a consideration. I chose the 60s because of the center brace and a bit more depth. My current frag tank has some branch rock underneath the egg crate. I think it keeps the fish a little happier.

This week I may spray the couple stands I have so far. I had to buy some pro classic for a job. Paint is Kinda free that way.. I have to see how much I have left after the job.

Tank is wet. Not one leak in the plumbing. Sitting at 1.020 and 55 degrees. Gotta bump those numbers up tonight. Tomorrow is the big day. The final thing to be moved out of my apartment is all of my fish and corals

So through frugalness I've made a few mistakes. First month in the new house I'm unsure what the utility bills are going to look like. I have experience with electric baseboard and it's expensive. I have 2 200 watt heaters running in the system and they're not keeping up. Every day I check in the tank and the temperatures have been running around 73-75 degrees. Too cold. Humidity has also been a big problem. Weather has been moderate and I've had the window open for humidity control.
As I'm starting to lose more and more acros I I need to come up with a solution. I had this dehumidifier at work, and brought it home. They typically kick out some heat. (Get two birds stoned at once)
Plugged it in tonight and I'll continue to monitor temps. I'm already up to 76
