Modding a nova extreme T5

I have 2 36' nova extreme T5 fixtures. After redoing my sump I need 2 24' fixtures.
Does anyone know if I can just chop a foot out of the fixture and use the same ballasts to power the 24 w bulbs?

I'm pretty sure it would work. One word of caution though is that you would be overdriving the 24" bulbs and would need to plan accordingly.
