Monti Cap starting to get white.

Hey, I recently purchased a Monti from Aquarium Center, and on one side it is getting white with little white strings blowing around. What is this and how do I stop it from going so white? Am I bleaching it? Where should I place it in my tank? High, low, Mid? How much flow? Thanks - Dan

I've never had much luck with my caps when that happens to them. The only thing I've been able to do is to break off the white part of the cap to stop the progression. If memory serves me correctly, which it may not, I think that there is a bacteria that does that to caps.

i completely killed off caps a few times just like that. now i'm having all kinds of success with caps.

basically it boils down to water params and light and temp. my problem was multiple things as i recall. i had let my salinity go up too high. then i also had alkalinity that wasn't balanced with my calcium. my lighting and temp were okay. for a while i was thinking the softies in my tank were chemically attacking it but as it turned out it was stability of alkalinity and salinity that creeped up too high.

I got you, I did a 20 gallon water change about a week ago, and just now did a 45 gallon water change to my tank, so hopefully it pulls through.
