Must I plumb in RO waste in front of P Trap?

Hi All - I am looking to rig up my auto top off tonight but wanted to ask for a little advice on a hopefully simple topic first. The instructions on the AWI typhoon says to drain wastewater into the line in front of the P trap. The sink drain I am tapping into is in my basement and I have a pump that pushes the sink’s drainwater up five feet into my main house drain pipe. It's a shame to have to push the wastewater into the pump only to be pumped back up and out, so I am wondering if it would be okay to tap into the line before the drainwater spills into the main house drain?

I think the purpose of the p trap is to collect any nuisance gases from running back into the sink. Is this critical for this application? Come to think of it, I am sure the traps captures carbon monoxide, but will this be an issue to have smalls amounts leak back to the wastewater line on the RO system?

Thanks!

I don't see any real problem with what you plan to do. I did something similar years ago when I lived at another location.

If you are really worried about it, you could install another trap above your main house drain pipe and connect the RO/DI unit's waste water there.

The other thing you could do is save that water and use it to water your lawn or other outside stuff.

That's a very good point and I think I may look to do just that. I might start be leaving the RO into the sink basin until I can drill a hole and seal it up around the hose.
I do enjoy my share of gardening and this would work nicely. I'll have to put some kind of basin out back, which is only about 12-15 feet from the sink.
Thanks, Dave

If it's convenient, some people fill up thir washing machine tub with the waste water and use it that way, it works fine. I may jusr route mine out to the lawn, seems a shame to waste it, especially in such hot weather.
