My 24G AP Nano Fuge Solution

Hey everyone first a lot of thanks go out to eveyone that has helped out with my questions.

Second I came up with a solution for a Fuge in the back of my 24G AP and think it could work for others. Maybe someone has done it but here goes.

I pulled out the garbage they include in the initial setup(bio balls, spong filters, and ceramic thingys(never put in). I put about a pound of live rock in the bottom, a Wisper filter in front of the overflow, and then macro algea in behind on top. I found on Ebay a LED

http://stores.ebay.com/MeasureExplorer

I contacted the store and they will give a 10% discount for anyone who orders.

Here is what he replied if you are interested.

I can offer 10% discount on the total amount for your comunity members. Please ask them leave me a message before payment to mention your email address jrwohler@aol.com. Your email address is the coupon.

I hope it is OK to post this. I am just trying to be helpful.

I have posted a pic and will upload another. Basically I used two suction cups from a previous filter tube of some sort...standard size to hold the bar out of the water...though it is completely submersible I have small problem with heat in the summer so didn't want to add any. Pointed the LEDs downward and while I can see the light on at night (running it at night so to balance my PH swings) it is not as bright as my blue moon light.

Eventually I bought some egg crate and will create a small filter basket in the back.

I would be interested to know what spectrum light they output in total and your macro growth with them.

Looks like a sound idea.. I was thinking about using a 10w submersible light for my tank in chamber 3 of the AP12. I am going to make a nice little holder for the cheato out of egg crate and put it in there nice an snug so that water has to pass through it.

Every since I put the bubble rock in my tank for a max duration of 24 hour my tanks PH has been at about 8.5 constantly. Weirdest thing though is that I have ( like last night ) a higher ph in the morning than from the night before.. odd.

I will chime in on here once I make my basket for the tank so I can show growth progress as well with this light

Good luck with it! Please provide some photos when you can :)

Hey two comments cool.

twan...I have had it running in the back for about 2-3 weeks the macro I have is going very well.
I had a fairly large batch to start and even the bottome is doing well I would say 5
inches or so think from the surface down. The ebay store owner would probably be able to
answer the spectrum thing better. I pulled it out during my water change to vacume the
rubble out and it all looked healthy

mynd...I had heat issues so submerging it was hard...I could have as it is submersible but like I
said heat was an issue. steelhealr on nano-reef.com had a huge tank thread he submerged a
light for a while then ripped the back off. Since you have a chiller you have a lot more
options. Thanks for being so friendly.

Hey JR.. Where you from? What is your zip code? Just curious since I noticed you have a ton of cheato and you might be closer than my alternate if you are willing to sell a tiny bit. If you feel more comfortable PM'ing me that information go ahead. Otherwise just update your profile with a city and zip.

Thanks! :)

Little Silver....I commute into the city and sometime end up taking the train in from Woodbridge. I actually think I have some cheato and calapara(spelling) mix....the cheato tank was empty so it is sort of mix..but more then willing to split some out if you want. If you want part of the egg crate sheet let me know too.

I only ask cause those that have used submersibles (like the almighty stealhlr) on nanoreef all had heat issues back in the day..........till LED's. Then with LED's at first say everything is doing fine then 1 month later see their macro brown out and melt........not due to lack of lighting.........due to the wrong spectrum of lighting. Im told 6700k would be best. I am just going on 2nd hand knowledge of what I have read only. Dont take this as a knock, I really want to find the correct power and spectrum LED for our applications.

If you get it sustained I would be willing to ditch my rear mounted setup and try some submersible LEDS. Good Luck 8)

No problem at all. In fact I read some of the same in the Nano forum....I know the LEDs are never going to work for corals. I will keep you updated for sure. At the moment it is doing well.

If LED's don't work for corals then how come Solaris is still selling?

Well I am not sure I stated that correctly....the really good LEDs are really expensive and do work. But these are the smaller ones so I guess they don't put out enough lums(something like that) and or they do not have the right spectrum. That is why personally I am monitoring the growth and color of my macro algea to make sure it is getting what it needs. I am really sorry I don't totally know it all ... I am trying to learn. Some of the more experienced reefers on the other site were both happy with the quality yet unsure of the spectrum. Basically I guess it was something that they had discussed in the past and really hadn't reached a conclusion(though I got the impression that corals would need more light then this and or a different wavelenght.

Why use high light output LED's versus 5mm standard LED's ?

5mm LEDs are very common and very cheap. The problem is, their light output is very low, the light output diminishes extremely quickly overtime and focusing the light onto a surface is very difficult.

The high power LED's have high light output, very little light loss over time, and have optics that can focus the light over a surface area. Luxeon is the leader in these LEDS and they are the ones used in the Solaris Ilumination System.

5 mm High Light Output LED
Flux (more is better) .5-2 Lumens 16-140 Lumens
Life (more is better) 5K-10K hours for White 70% maintenance after 50,000 hours
Power (more is better) 25-50 mWatts

My Solaris does great for some corals and not so great for others.

Is it a G series?

It is the original one.

This is right from Solaris' Forum:

G series
Hard Corals 18" deep,
Clams and soft corals 24" deep.

H Series
Hard Corals 24" deep
Clams and soft corals up to 30" deep.

Try that for the corals in your tank. The G series you have will work up to that depth.

Hey that is OK I don't mind being slightly sidetracked ... made me read and learn. :D

Well I was rinsing my filter last night and still everything looks good. I am guessing I will have a shelf life of maybe a year and half on this light bar.

Where did you buy the 4LED submersible? Cost? Mine was like 24+shipping ...32 I think.

Mine I think is 12 it is submersible but I have it pointed down and it is suctioned on the back glass using two leftover suction cups from some filter tube or something. Who knows? I am a packrat so just had them lying around. Did you notice any heat?
