My DIY Kalk Reactor

Well, I have been spending to much $$ on this hobby so I decided to try and save some. This is my attempt at a Kalk reactor. I did have a brand new mj400 mounted up but I melted it trying to dry the epoxy. :( here are some pics. Let me know if you think of anything that would make it be bad. BTW I replaced the steel bolt in the top with Stainless Steel.

Don't you just hate when that happens.

Looks real good. The only problem I see is keeping after whether or not you need to add more or have too much kalk in the reactor. I guess after the first couple of cycles you'll get a good feel of a time line for adding more. PH level change will probably be a good indicator.

Good Luck

I'd get rid of the metal bolt all together and replace it with a nylon bolt.

Ideally, you don't want any type of metals coming in contact with any water that goes into your tank.

Good to know. I will try and locate a nylon one. What about the stainless that are in pumps and power heads?

I'm gonna do one too, using a magnetic stirrer to agitate the solution.
Questions:
1) Is that 6" pipe and how long?
2) What is the red piece on the top called and where did you get it?
3) Is the thing on the bottom a toilet flange, or what is that thing and where did you buy it? Thanks!

You guys can use this instead. $38.00 a foot.

Gee, thanks, but I'm gonna use this, only $22 a foot, and it goes together with PVC cement:

That's clear PVC?
Yup. It must be really expensive to take out the whiteness.

Hey -- I bet you would know the answer to this:
If I want to put those John Guest fittings into my PVC pipe as shown above, can I do it by drilling and tapping? What size hole (and tap) would that be?

My Kalk reactor is 4" PVC 24" long. The bottom is a toilet adapter without an opening and the red is a pressure testing plug. I picked up everything at lowes.

Looking to do one of these myself to... I agree on the spending way to much on the hobby so I figure ill try to save some money myself... I like your design.. Any chance you could post a brief step by step write up on how you built it... Also Thanks to JimROTH for the link to the clear tubing... I agree it would be better to see whats going on inside...
