My first saltwater setup

the peppermint shrimp is a hit or miss. they will either eat it or not touch it.

i suggest some lemon juice in a pipette or needle and squirt it right at the mouth of the ap

idk if these questions were asked/answered but what kind of water are you using? food? how often are you feeding? whats in the tank?

I read that peppermint shrimp, nudibranches and an injection of lime juice can kill of these guys. I seem to have about 5-6 Aiptasia. Which one of the above killers would you recommend?

I also seem to have some green algae and very similar reddish brown growth on some other rocks. would you recommend any inverts to curb their growth?

I used this http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~category~Blue_Life_Aiptasia_Control_Saltwater_Aquarium_Supplies_Additives___Supplements_Aiptasia___Pest_Control_Liquid_Pest_Eliminators~vendor~Blue_Life_USA~SearchStr~aiptasia~action~view~idProduct~BL2111~idCategory~FIADAFLC.html Then purchased 3 peppermints and they seem to keep them in check now. I would purchase a cleanup crew snails hermits maybe an emerald crab or two. Also like the person before me asked what kind of water are you using? your lights could be contributing to the algae. the red slime algae could be from a lack of flow in the tank.

I had done my initial tank fill up and one subsequent wc with filtered tap water (since about.com had okayed it). But after talking with you guys, have decided to perform future RO water, and will get it today from aquatic obsessions.

The green and the red growth were already on the rocks when I had gotten them. And I am looking for suggestions to curb them.

Any suggestions for powerheads for my 20 gallon would be welcome. I am also looking for upgrading my lighting system, but am trying to avoid having to pawn my limbs doing so. Please let me know if there is a scheduled group buy.

For me ... certainly a personal preference here that T5 lighting is going to be the most economical way to go. My two suggestions, I guess your tank is 24 in long right, would be either the T5 lighting from Catalina or during our next group buy with Premium Aquatics you could get one of the less expense CurrentUSA fixtures.
This one has built in timers.

Or one of the sunlight fixtures that they offer.
Or check out some of the other sponsors, if a member they will give you a discount a lot of time.
Here is the link for the water filtration systems in our next group buy.

That should be perfect for your tank. If you plan on putting sps in your tank i would get a 4 bulb
t5ho setup just have to get one that will fit your tank. you could either buy it new or there are some great people on here that might be selling a used one that would work for you

I just found a decent deal on a nova supreme that houses 2 39w t50 and is 36". Unfortunately my tank is 30". Is this a major problem?
My wattage/gallon comes to be 3.9 which is perhaps decent?

...Awaiting opinions of my new found sensei(s)

Please pardon my frugality, but I am really not looking to spend that high on my lighting at the moment. I realise it is a one time buy and I will regret it later if I dont go with a good system (I realised this when I was getting my subwoofer, but the life of living things weren't really dependant on it ) ... confused.

If I was to look for a used light that's collecting dust in one of the members' garages and he/she's OK parting with for a price lesser than what it was brought for .. which forum do I put the word out in ?

for sale/trade thread. in the title just put WTB (which means want to buy) Lights.

IMO lights and a quality skimmer are the 2 most important things for a reef, as well as flow.

I totally hear what you are saying . I have ordered a hydor 1 400 GPH for the water flow. Am actively working on the lights ..
.. but not so much the skimmer after having read some of the suggestions. Do you think I could hold on to that for sometime? I actually wanted to wait till sometime next month and perhaps get a hang on refugium.

... I got confused with the for sale/trade forum name since I had nothing to sell or trade. Thanks a lot man ..

You could hang that one.

You might find the fixture that Hirobro posted cheaper...during our group buy it would be 180 ish no tax or delivery if you can wate till next PA group buy.

You could try to contact
http://www.tfjpetcenter.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=33
They sell both manufactures and maybe you can get a decent deal as they are a sponsor.

I would skip the 36 inch fixture as you are going to have a lot of overhang so the wattage is really wasted. The lights by CurrentUSA are sort of nice because you don't need timers or moonlights. Ryan88 bought that one and is pretty happy with it once he figured out the timers.

RE: Refugium. I am a bit of a broken record on this. I think they are great to have. A good refugium and with regular water changes will be a very good solution for you.

I like the 24" setup. With the bulbs I beleive it will go to around 160 bucks, which I am OK with. When is the next group by in PA?

If its not too far away I may be able to hold on till then.

Thanks .. the misunderstanding was in a different level. When you said PA, I thought you meant Pennsylvania :), which prompted me to infer that this was a group buy outside the schedule, one which I was not aware of.

I dont think I could wait that long .. I would wait a couple more weeks for other members to respond to my "wanted" Advert .. and then get the 30" sundial that was suggested. I have seen it online for around 180-ish ..

Gogol, nice to meet you yesterday. Hope the corals work out. Keep your pics updated.

When I picked up rocks from a tank break down, I've used Joe's juice on rocks before I brought them home. There were about 4-5 aiptasia growing on them. Its been two months and haven't any new buds.
