My Weekly Problem Column – What is it?

As a newbie, it seems like every week it is something else.

I’ve got a brown/black growth that has just shown up in my 4-5 month old tank. At first I thought it was a diatom problem that I understand is typical to newbie tanks. But it did more than just produce that typical brown covering on the sand…it grew hair. To the right of the cynarina is the more typical diatom looking brown sand…but to the left and top of the cynarina, it has grown, looking more like an algae...hair like...maybe an 1/8 of an inch long. Any help? By the way, the reason the sand is white further left, and above the star polyp is that I currently have a joint mining operation occurring with a gobi and pistol shrimp, just out of view. And here’s the big question - how do I control this? Already have a bunch of snails and hermits…and a MIA cucumber.

Additional info…in the morning, just when the lights come on, it is pretty much gone. I don’t know if it is because of the lack of light or the clean-up crew that is out at night. During the lighted period, it just grows fast.

Looks like cyano bacteria to me. Just another common occurrence in a new tank. You can siphon it out to keep it under control.

That definitely looks like cyanobacteria to me too... in my experience, just keeping up with water changes and siphoning it out works to clear it up.. it's more or less one of the stages of a new tank(i.e. under one year).
