how high should i put my lights off the water surface?

What kind of lights are you going to be running. I actually have the same question as I am starting to design my hood for T5's

average height for halides is about 10-12 inches or higher from the water's surface for a 250w. there was a tank of the month in Reef Central that only had them 6 inches away.

heat is the major factor, so throw in a few fans in the hood

2x250w metal halide. they are about 16'' away right now.. i think they could go down

I meant this for the T5's sorry.

my 2X250's sit about 9 inches up from the water's surface.

Par values drop the higher the light is from the water.

mine are about 3-4 inches above the water, but i have to clean them often.
