new to salt algae question

I had brown then went to green now hair and green what should I do? I clean the glass but the hair alage is getting all over the rock what is the best thing to get to eat this stuff? I am keeping my lights on a very low time(3 to 4 hrs/day). Maybe more cheato in my sump? also cleaning my skimmer every other day has alot of brownish/green water from the foam is this all normal for a tank that has been running about a month thanks John

I have just replied to a another post on this very subject two days ago. Though the question was if a refugium will help in starving algae. The explanation still applies. And yes. It is normal for a new tank.

Here is the relavent quote.

"If you tank is still young, you can expect to go through an "algae" cycle. Green->brown->hair->cyano->coraline. Its just like the nitrogen cycle. It takes time to go through, but it will pass. As your system matures, nutrient parameters will fluctuate, benefitting one organism over the other. Populations will equalize eventially.

The tips you read on any forum help minimise the impact of nusiance blooms on the system, and the length of time for each stage. As your tank matures, it will reach that equilibrium. Then if you have a bloom of something, its makes it easier to narrow down the cause of bloom (Excess feeding, worn out lighting, etc...)"

John some of it sounds like a cycle and a month means your not done yet .
Does the tank have inhabitants and are you feeding it ? If so feed less .

If your numbers (nitrate, phos, alk,ph,salinity, nitrates ,etc..)are safe to add livestock some grazing cleanup crew will help with the hair algae(Urchin, cowrie, sea hare, snails /crabs for now ) Remove as much of the hair manually for now . Most grazers wont tpuch the longer hair algae .

If you have no light needeing livestock shut the lights for a few days and do some water changes . Lights out should kill some algae and the water change will remove the nutrients . The green skimate sounds like excessive nutrients .

You just have to keep a check on water quality for now and as long as thats good your tank will level out .

Basically the best thing you can do to avoid the nuissance algae is to keep phosphates and nitrates low... Also avoid adding any silicates... All of these can be found in tap water so the easiest solution is to use Reverse osmosis water.... As stated above though, if this is a new tank, it is very normal to experience several stages of algae while going through a cycle. When you know your phosphates and nitrates are in check, slowly begin to add hours of light each day....

I know, I saw this thread late, good advice so far from the club.

Buddy of mine, new on the forum, has a Major Hair algae attack, i will test his water on sunday, and gave some advice, anyone else is welcome to chime in!!!
30 gal T5 lights sump skimmer
Been using Neptune Tap water=Bad
Till his RO Unit is up buy water from Trop
Do water changes every other day with the new water till the tank is flushed out.
Top off with trops RO water.
Use Chemi-Pure and Diamond Carbon to help remove impurities.
Skim like crazy

Already ordered a clean up crew=Good
Not much livestock yet ,so that's not a big factor.
