You could also consider the following alternative

This method doesn't use any gasoline at all (remember that the truck that guy hiched a ride on still used the disel )

Actually it runs on a methane that you get from slow burning of wood (or something like that - it is past midnight and the chemistry department in my brain is fast asleep). It is a concept developed really long time ago. The fuel efficiency is approximately 20% of gasoline, but then wood does grow on trees

So the big ugly contraption at the back is a big boiler that is cooking wood chips, you plug the output of it who knows where and it chugs along.
