Newbie: tank cleaning question

Didn't know where to post this. Did a search but couldn't find much. . .

Hello. I think I'm keeping up on my new tank pretty well, and the fish seem pretty happy.

But -- every week my tank accumulates a layer of a white substance on the powerhead and top of the filter scoop (the thing that sucks in the water). I wipe it off with a paper towel; no big deal.

But this white substance is accumulating on my live rocks, too.

I was wondering if -- during your weekly cleaning ritual -- you vacuum the live rocks as well? or shoot some air at them to dislodge things? And what is this "white stuff"? Is it OK?

Thanks for your help. Any suggestions you can offer would be great! I am loving this hobby!

Jim :)

If you are getting a white film it sounds like your Calcium is precipitating out of the water. What is your maintenance/dosing schedule? What are your parameters?

if it's a fuzzy soft white substance above water, it's normal. I've had that before and it didn't bother anything. I would say some kind of fungus, but a pic will definitely help

picture would be nice, but as far as cleaning the liverocks, if you want you can use a giant turkey baster and blast the rocks clean.
