Odd delivery

So I get an email from our receptionist that I have a UPS package from BRS up front. I go get it and return to my desk and wondering what it could be because I didnt order anything from them aside from a couple odds and ends recently which I have already gotten. I open up the box and it's a gallon of BRS Bulk Magnesium Chloride. No invoice, no receipt....just the product. ??? I look back through my emails, invoices and statements to be sure that I didnt order it. Nope. I did receive an email about prizes for rating products but I have yet to rate anything. I can't access BRS to see if there was a promotional thing going on that if you purchase so much, you get this free. Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe it was sent as a free gift KNOWING that I would need Magnesium Sulfate to use it?? Thus forcing me to by the Mag S? Hmmmm...sneaky if that was the case. At any rate, I don't need anything right now considering that I only have about 6 tiny hairy mushrooms that survived months of darkness (revealed by the awesome new lights that I could not see with T5's).

Should I contact BRS to find out why it was sent to me?

I was wondering what happened to my BRS Magnesium Chloride order???

Actually if you need Magnesium Sulfate to get the right ionic equilibrium, just go to your local drug store and buy Epsom Salt….that is Magnesium Sulfate. That is what I’ve been using.

I'm going to contact them and see what they say. I'm pretty sure they are going to just let me keep it but I'm just curious as to how it got addressed to me.

Just got off the phone with them and the guy just said to keep it. Took my name and email down and that was it. He called it a "random ship out". Sounded like it's not an uncommon thing. LOL Why couldnt have been a couple of Vortech's? (although i'm sure they would have made me send THOSE back).

Funny story, you did the right thing and you got a freebie cannot beat that.

It was just weird the way he said it. "Oh, it was just a random ship out." Makes me wonder how much money they lose from that happening. No complaints from me though. I guess i'll store it till I get some mag demanding corals .

Here’s the recipe when you’re ready……3 cups or Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) plus 5 cups of magnesium chloride and brought up to one gallon of RO/DI water. I found it best to individual dissolve each ingredient in RO/DI water, then combine the two, and bring it up to one gallon. This method minimizes the amount of precipitate you’ll get. This precipitate is OK to add to your tank….just need to shake the bottle before adding so you get an even dose of the precipitate.

Thanks for that. I've never dosed anything before. So that would be 1/2 of a "two-part" dosing regement, correct?

Actually the "2-part" actually refers to calcium and alkalinity.

Mag is actually the third think you dose in the 2part system. But it's used much less.

So how often does one have to dose for mg? Is it a common thing?

Depends on the salt you’re using, how frequently you do water changes, and the volume of water you change. I’m still nursing the first bottle I made about 3 – 4 years ago. I don’t dose very frequently because it’s in the salt I use….and sometimes too much.

What you do need is a good alk, calc and mag test kit. I would highly recommend Red Sea Pro kit....has all three tests in it. Initial cost is a touch high, but the refills are cheap. It turns out to be the most cost effect test kit once you get into refills.
