Is it width purchasing one? The ones I see are fairly expensive.

ACC rents a PAR meter. Don't know what they charge.

It's nice to have but not necessary until you've already dropped $5k+ into the hobby then the $300 doesn't hurt that much anymore

Compared to all the other equipment that we purchase , we test for everything thing else lighting is important also. Why not test ???

I found knowing the absolute values of lighting makes little difference unless you already have a very stable thriving system. Corals are quite adaptive. I have SSC in two different spots one at about 300 par the other 800 par and it does equally well. Once you reach that stable stage you can move corals around to achieve the result you want. And you will know whether more or less light is better for your system even without the par measurement.
