it have an AC socket, that you can plug in a equipment, the unit will "check/detect" the pH... when it is too low or too high (configurable), then it will shut off the power to the AC socket.

usually used with CO2/Calcium Reactor, when the calcium reactor drop rate too fast or too much, causing the pH to reduce to a certain set point, the pH control will then automatic shut off the calcium reactor, to prevent the pH drop even lower...

Also, A Controller doesn't "need" a Co2 System. You could use it to stictly monitor PH.

I bought the controller before I had a CO2 Reactor...but I knew I would eventually be upgrading.
