Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
The best thing to do is to test it and when you see your post-media PO4 higher or the same as your pre-media PO4 reading change it. If you do this for a few cycles you should get a good feeling for the frequency of your particular system needs. It will be different for you than anyone else because of your system requirements, feeding, filtration, skimming, etc.
With the availability of generic Phosphate media (You just missed the closing of our Group buy on GFO/Phosban - $36 for 5 lbs), it is not as important to make it last as long as possible like it was when it was $20 for 150ML.
So if your not sure, change it once a month. You could go 3 months like Phyl said by testing, but at the low cost of GFO and the High cost of Hanna type devices and regents, it would take a lot of GFO to make up for it.
If I run mine any more then 6 - 8 weeks it changes to a rock hard concrete like substance that is near impossible to get out of the reactor. I've actually used a small hammer drill with a masonry bit and it was still difficult to remove.
Thanks Guys.
I know I missed the group buy (just picked up some more phosguard this weekend), but Foster and smith has their own brand for half the cost of phosban.
Check it out (if you didn't but it in bulk that is), I just advised my sister to pick some up for their new reactor.
