polyps wont totally open!

I have about 5 zoa frags in my 24 gallon jbj. when i get the frags they open right up, but after a few days they close VERY tight. i have looked at night and dont see any predators on there. I dont see any fungus or spotting on the body of the zoas. only thing that looks outta place is that on some of them it seems that they almost "shed" a little of their outer layer. they have been pretty much closed about a week now.I have tested calcium, ph, alk, kh,mag and nitrate. everything well within the levels. also have brand new lights over them. I cannot get a picture because my transfrer cable for my camera is m.i.a.... Anyone have any ideas? feel free to stop by and diagnose yourself. Thanks for any help you may be able to give!

It could be poor aclimation to the new lighting. Try running just the actinics for a day or two and see if they open. If not what else is in the tank, coral / fish? There are lots of so called reef safe fish that are known zoas eaters, Zebramosa tangs, Rabbit fish, etc... Dwarf angels can pick at the algae and mucus on zoas and harass them enough to keep them closed. Chemical warefare, especially from soft corals will also cause them to close up as well.

Did you try the actinics only as Jeff suggested. That's most likely the problem. You don't have a heavy stock of leathers so that's not likely the cause.

they came from a tank with alot more light and were alot more shallow in that tank. i have them at the bottom of mine. they are kinda open, but something is just not right....i miss my discus! Thank you for posting back phyl, any advice is good at the moment

Can you post a picture? What were your temperature, mg, ph, alk, ca, trate, PO4 numbers? What light do you have over them? What size tank? What light were they in before? What fish do you have in the tank?

thats what im leaning towards now is a temp issue. its a nano, so it goes from 75 to 81 in ohhh say..........i dunno 3 minutes! small tanks really suck. if i knew i needed a chiller i woulda started up my 75 gallon, instead i just throw in the same amount of money into a 24 that looks like $@*T....

i lost the cable to upload.... ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!. dipping these babys tonight, will see if i can use stillwells camera. thanks everyone

They do sell small drop in chillers for nanos....they fit in your fan slot, cost is about 100 bucks if I ever go back to running mine that will be an option.

Cell phone-take pic-E Mail to yourself-save as to pics on computer-upload to NJRC-post pic on thread! Works. How are the Zoas?

ok.. update. so while i was taking out my polyps for their furan dip i found about five astrea? starfish. i know some people say they eat zoas... do you think that they randomly eat zoa or that the will eat the ones that arent doin so hot? if they are just gonna eat my stuff im about to buy a harlequin to tighten em' up a bit!

did second dip this morning.... two frags are opening up more than before, and in general the polyps look alot more filled out so i think the furan is working
