Pruning cheato

Set up the fuge last week and now I need to prune the cheato. Is there any certain way to do it? Does it matter if I cut away the new or the old and discard one or the other?

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,
I just pull mine apart and give it away, It is probably better to take out the older because as it grows it is taking the algae nutrient stuff out of your water. Some even sell it, someone is always asking for some.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but just have a question about the chaeto myself.

Can chaeto release anything back into the system, say if it absorbs too much of the nutrients, or does the new growthof the chaeto prevent that ??

if some of the cheato dies (generally the underside of the ball that isnt lit) it could rerelease nutrients back in. just rotate the cheato ball about once a week.

Anyone need a handful of cheato in Middletown? I have not pruned in about 5 months and I guess I should. It will probably just be a sandwich bag size.

If not, I remember reading that there is a proper disposal of this stuff to make sure it doesn't end up in our oceans. Leave it out of water for a week or just nuke it?

I have some if you need it and want to come to the meeting Saturday.

If you have some extra, I will be at the meeting on Saturday. Need to setup the new refugium.
