Pumps generate heat ?

How much heat do yoou think 2 rio pumps in my wet dry will create? I have one main pump feeding the tank and one feeding the skimmer. The skimmer is a externa euro reeef with a eheim pump. I have 2 korillia 3 powerheads. I cant seem to get the temp below 80-81 even with heater and lights off. Any ideas? are the cheap rio pumps the problem?

kinda depends on the size of the tank - but yes small powerheads are known to put heat into the tank. The exceptions are the high-end ones like tunze/vortech.

Rio's and Danner mag drives are known for generating heat, you may want to consider a quiet one pump by pentair, they generate less heat and use less wattage, ehiem's are good too but they are more expensive.

unless your Koralia's are clogged I doubt they are generating heat, the 2 only uses 4.5w and the 3 uses 6.5w the higher the wattage the more heat the pump will generate.

can you suggest a size pump for myy 72 gal bowfront it is rr. What size pentair. Also what size pump would i need for my skimmer that also is a rio in the wetdry. It feed a euro reef rc180.

for the return to the tank I'd suggest a 3000..... I'd need to know how many GPH pump your skimmer uses before I can recommend one for that.

the unit is designed for 180 gallon tank. The people at euro reef had me set it up to discharge 2 times the capacity per hour . So i meaured the discharge rate into a quart container and have it set for 140 gal per hour. If that makes sense

You have a euro reef skimmer and your using a rio pump for the feed? and the eheim for the circulation/ air intake on the body of the skimmer right?

You may be able to use a maxi jet for the feed they are better than rio's... if the feed is around 140gph than a maxi 600 (160gph) or a mini jet 606 (84-160gph)should do the trick

What model rio's are you using for the return and skimmer?

yes the eheim is mounted to the skimmer body. I have 2 rio's in my wet dry. one is a smaller one that feeds the skimmer and a large one thats feeds the tank its a model 2500

the room temp is 70-72 degrees

The rio 2500 uses 55 watts and is 3/4" I would switch that with a quiet one 3000 which is 40 watts and 1" I would also switch your tubing to 1" for the return the more water volume movement the better (not GPH but actual volume). I'd also switch the other rio with a maxi jet 600. and you should notice a drop in temp.

Well I found out yesterday part of my hear problem. I have 2 heaters one 200watt i keep in the overflow box and one 100 watt i keep in the wet dry. It seems the one in the wet dry is not calibrated corectly i have it set for 76-77 degrees and when i put my hand in the wetdry to check the rio pump to se if it was hot i said wow this water is awfull warm. I looked at the heater and it was on and the temp in the tank was 82.3 degrees . I have the heaters set to 78.


I took the heater out and put it in a container of cold water with a thermometer overnite. the heater was set at 76. When i check the temp this morning it was 85. So i guess that heater needs replacement. Its a aqueon glass one.

I understand what you are saying but the heater has a temp dial and its off by 11 degrees so i need to compensate for that? or just don't go by the dial ? My 200 watt is dead on the temp i set it at. So why put the numbers there if they don't mean anything.

I would look for a used Medusa temp controller and plug both heaters into it and some fans. They are very reliable and accurate within .5 degrees.

I use those numbers as a starting point for dialing in my temperature, but I use my thermometer to determine what my tank's temp is. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever gone back to look at what my heaters have ever been set to.

I understand the setting is a base and i used it as a base setting and was fine for weeks then all of a sudden there where temp swings from 79-83 all the time no pattern. Lights on or off. Thought it was the pumps. Took out the heater and now i have a steady 79 degrees.
