Pura Phoslock

Yes I have used the Pura Phoslock. It works well, except after a while it will leach the phosphate back into the tank if left to long in the sump or filter.

Are you sure you were using Phoslock? Phoslock doesn't leach back into the water. That's the main reason why this particular product is so popular with a lot of reefers.

Pura Phoslock is made from Beta Ferric Oxide Hydroxide which doesn't leach back into the water. Other Ferric Hydroxides based products should also not leach back into the water. Ferric Hydroxides based products are the "rust" colored products while Alumina based products are usually white. The white colored Alumina products will leach back into the water.

Phoslock is a 2nd generation based product that absorbs more then any other product for the same media weight and doesn't break down (crumble) like others do.

It's the "top of the line" product for phosphate control bar none. It works much faster then competing products too which can be a problem if your phosphates are high. If you have this problem you will want to run it in a slow flow environment while gradually increasing the flow or the sudden drop in phosphates will show negatively in your corals. Alternately, use a small portion of the product while slowly adding more product.

(like many other adjustments in reef tanks, changes should be made slow even if you have super high levels. The "bad" levels didn't get there overnight so you shouldn't remove them overnight either! Slow and steady improvements are the key.)

PS you can test the leaching of any product by simply putting the used media in RO/DI water for a while and then testing that water.
